An Unpleasant Emotion

October 31, 2005

I’m currently almost midway through “Tokyo Love Story”, having watched episode 5, and the experience brings back so many memories from my early youth that I can’t help feeling glad that I’ve grown immune to romantic infatuations over the years: romantic love is a deeply irrational and upsetting thing, a monster with a raging appetite which is not easily satisfied and a cruel streak which wreaks vengeance upon whoever is struck with it should the madness not be fully reciprocated on the other side. When Lord Tennyson said it was “better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”, he must either have been indulging in poetic license, or else he was far from well acquainted with the emotion about which he was writing: what is certain either way is that he cannot possibly have had romantic love in mind when he crafted those words.
